Understanding Healthcare Pricing Terms
We recognize that reviewing hospital charges can feel overwhelming. Below are definitions to help clarify what the charge list represents and what it does not.
Charge
The dollar amount assigned to a specific healthcare service before any discounts are negotiated with insurance payers. The charge is not the same as the price. Very few patients pay the full charge, regardless of insurance status.
Cost
“Cost” varies depending on who is paying:
- Patient: The amount you pay out-of-pocket for services
- Provider: The direct and indirect expenses incurred to deliver care
- Insurer: The amount paid to the provider or reimbursed to the patient
- Employer: The expense associated with providing employee health benefits
Out-of-Pocket
The portion of the total price that the patient is responsible for paying. This may include copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Price
The negotiated amount (also called the “allowed amount”) that providers expect to be paid by insurance companies. Your out-of-pocket responsibility is based on this allowed amount. Prices vary by insurance plan because they are negotiated separately.
