Trauma Informed Care

“Trauma is not what happens to you; it is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.”   ~ Gabe Mate

Trauma-Informed Care…if the world turns away, we will stay

At Compass Health Network, we welcome people seeking services with kindness and respect. Compass staff use trauma informed care practices to support clients and the communities we serve. Recognizing the impact of trauma, Compass fully implemented the Missouri Trauma Informed Care model in all services to promote healing and recovery.

Travis Dewitt

Community-based Supervisor

Trauma informed care is the process of appreciating the depth of experiences that make up a person from the beginning to now. It is valuing the “why” over the “what” of emotions and behaviors. It focuses on a comprehensive understanding of personality and not the singular current snapshot being seen.”

Trauma Awareness

Every day, Compass Health serves clients who have experienced trauma. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing estimate around 70% of people will experience a potentially traumatic event during their lifetime. At Compass, we recognize how prevalent trauma is in our society. By creating a trauma informed culture, Compass continuously prioritizes supporting those who have experienced trauma while avoiding re-traumatization.

We meet people where they are with acceptance and respect, creating a supportive, safe space for engagement,” Victoria Walker, Vice President of Children’s Services and a champion of Trauma Informed Care says. “That is what Trauma Informed Care is.

The Four R's

A trauma-informed program, organization, or system:

Realizes widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for recovery.

Recognizes signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, families, staff, and others involved with the system.

Responds by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices.

Seeks to actively Resist re-traumatization.

Why trauma informed culture matters

A Trauma Informed culture embeds the six principles of Trauma Informed Care into all aspects of the organization. Providing a trauma informed culture at Compass allows a safe space for the emotions and thoughts of all clients, understanding many may be experiencing painful and scary situations. This culture aims at providing clients with feelings of safety, security, and support. We work to encourage our clients of their value, regardless of the situation that results in seeking help. A trauma informed organization recognizes that seeking help can be one of the most difficult things a person can do in life and works hard to show clients immediately that they are not alone and there is hope.

A Trauma Informed Organization appreciates people wholly. Despite challenges, difficulties, behaviors, bias, and stereotypes; people matter for who they are and are accepted as they are in a Trauma Informed Culture.

Trauma Informed Care Committee

To prioritize a trauma informed culture, Compass maintains a Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Committee that meets regularly. The TIC Committee not only promotes an internal culture of trauma informed care but enhances trauma awareness in the communities. The TIC Committee is currently developing presentations for communities to raise awareness in regarding the prevalence of trauma, while also aiming to increase compassion for those impacted by trauma.
